Book Review: ‘Fermentation Revolution’ by Sébastien Bureau and David Côté

Growing up in Poland, our pantry was always filled with jars upon jars of fermented delicacies.  From pickles, sauerkraut, red peppers, cauliflower and beets to cherries, apples, pears and peaches.  Believe me, at that time in Poland, most people preserved their food – it was a sight to see and pride of many homemakers.  Yup, long before we were all talking about the benefits of probiotics – people were using fermented foods to aid digestion and keep healthy immune systems!

Needless to say, when I saw the title ‘Fermentation Revolution’, I knew I had to have this book.  After all, these days, we all seem to be trying to be healthier than ever.  And what better way than going back to the simpler old times and methods!

Sébastien Bureau and David Côté – two food enthusiasts from Quebec, explain in simple terms the idea behind food fermentation and the amazing effects it has on our health.  And through some awesome recipes, they show that fermenting does not have to be complicated or overwhelming!  It can be quite simple, inexpensive and super cool too;)

I mean – who doesn’t want to know how to make their own kombucha at home?  I do!  I SO do!  And water kefir, and sake and miso soup!

This book will be your go-to-reference when it comes to fermenting vegetables, fruit, dairy and non-dairy milks, grains and legumes.  You will find out all about the science behind fermentation, the different fermentation processes and useful equipment.

What I LOVE about this book:  the authors thoughtfully marked each recipe with the level of difficulty – so you can start off with the ones marked as ‘easy’ and then move on from there;)

If you’re into healthy living, fantastic recipes, real food and a small revolution in your pantry – you may want to consider this read!

5 hearts out of 5 for ‘Fermentation Revolution’

Happy Birthday To My Baby and An Interview with a 4 Year Old!

Happy Birthday to my Daniel today!  My baby turns 4 years old and I’m a proud, proud mama!  On this day, 4 years ago, I became a mom once again and I knew at that moment my life was full.  I always wondered how it would be possible to have the same amount of love for your second child, as for your first.  And yet, there it was.  Love was just bursting from my heart!

Red Currant And Peach Juice

I remember spending summer days on my grandparents’ farm, picking red currants off their shrubs.  Mind you, at that time, it was intense labour for my family, as my grandparents had A LOT of shrubs!  Just doing one was loads of work!  Each family member had a little stool and a bowl and we sat around and picked, picked, picked.  Ate some in between, of course.  You can’t beat that taste.  Hence, when red currants are in season, I absolutely must have them!

A lovely Red Currant and Peach Juice is SO good and super good for you!  Plus, it’s easy breezy to make!

  • 3 cups red currants
  • 3 ripe peaches

Delicious Homemade Chocolate Milk

I must be a big kid (at least at heart) because I do LOVE  an occasional glass of chocolate milk;)  And on a hot day, what better than a nice cold glass of the chocolate stuff!  My kids are split on chocolate milk – Dominick loves it, Daniel – not so much.  So I make enough for two, and my little guy is happily drinking his white milk:)

  • 1.5 cups milk (any milk of your preference)
  • 1 tbsp dark unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp organic cinnamon
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp raw honey

Product Review: Dalcini Stainless Steel Lunch/Snack Containers

Even though summer break has began not so long ago, I am already thinking ahead to the school semester that is to come!  I’m actually quite excited for my Daniel – he is starting Junior Kindergarten this year and he is SUPER happy!  So, to start practicing our lunch preparing and container opening/closing skills, we got some new containers for my little man;)  I do love the Mighty Hippo containers which I reviewed a few months back (See post: Product Review: Mighty Hippo Containers).  However, I saw these Dalcini Containers, which are completely stainless steel, and I thought they might be great to try!

Product Review: Audible – An Amazon Company (Audiobooks)

If you are a book lover like me, you know there is something absolutely romantic, calming and simply special about starting a new book.  Such a fantastic feeling!

Now, while I love to read (LOVE!), I’m also a full-time employed mommy of two, with many, many priorities on my list.  Needless to say,  it becomes a bit hard to find time to sit down and read every day, or at least read as much as I would like to.  No problems at all, though, as I think I have the perfect solution!
