‘Pear-icious’ Breakfast Smoothie

I saw some beautiful red pears at the market yesterday and I obviously had to have them – they looked SO good!  And thus, I present you with a ‘Pear-icious’ Breafast Smoothie today!

  • 2 ripe red pears (Red Anjou or Red Bartlett are great!)
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • Cut fruit into pieces (leaving skin on pears)
  • Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth
  • Garnish with a touch of cinnamon
  • Serve cool

Consuming the skin of the pear will not only provide you with LOADS of dietary fibre, but, here is a fun fact:  the skin of the pear contains 3 to 4 times  the phenolic phytonutrients as comparing to its flesh, including antioxidants, anti-inflammatory flavonoids, and potentially anti-cancer phytonutrients like cinnamic acids (The World’s Healthiest Foods).

Red pears in particular have a high concentration of the phytonutrient anthocyanin which has anti-aging properties and promotes heart health!

Overall, this ‘Pear-icious’ Breafast Smoothie will provide you with Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, potassium, fibre, manganese, magnesium, folate and protein.

Delicious and nutritious, you’ll LOVE this smoothie, and not just for breakfast!

Cheers to YOUR health!

Coffee is Life! How to Make a Café Bombón

Coffee is life, at least for me!

So, I asked my beautiful cousin, Magda, about recipes for Spanish coffee.  After all, she married into a Spanish family, so I figured – who will know better?!  And within minutes, I had SO many coffee ideas that I will seriously be trying a different coffee every week;)  And not just Spanish!  Thank you Magda!

Today, I am making Café Bombón.

I did a bit of research before making this pretty drink and it turns out Café Bombón started its roots in Valencia, Spain, and was then carried throughout the entire country.

Bombón derives its name from the Spanish term that means “confection.”  So, basically – sweet coffee.  Works for me!

  • 1 part sweet condensed milk
  • 1 part espresso

The ratio of milk to espresso should really depend on your preference.  For a stronger, less sweet coffee, use 1 part milk, 2 part espresso

  • Pour espresso into a glass
  • Carefully pour condensed milk to sink underneath the coffee
  • Serve in a glass to show the two layers
  • Stir before drinking

Apparently, some Spanish establishments simply serve an espresso with a sachet of condensed milk for patrons to make themselves.  Cool!

Now imagine serving this beauty next time you are entertaining!  You’re sure to impress!

Happy Sunday!

Product Review: Marc Anthony Strictly Curls – Curl Envy Cream

My hair is naturally curly with a BIG attitude. So, I have been using a variety of different products to tame it somewhat!

Whenever I feel like letting my curls bounce, I use the Marc Anthony Strictly Curls – Curl Envy Cream, and I think it’s about time to give it a full review.

Amazon offers a 177ml / 6oz bottle of this product for approximately CAD $19 – similar to the local drugstore price. Reasonable for a product that will last you quite a while.

Marc Anthony Strictly Curls – Curl Envy Cream  promises to tame dry, coarse hair with an intensity of all-day moisture, definition and frizz control. Ideal for frizzy curls – big or small, thick or fine.

Yes, the cream works extremely well. I have used it for a couple of months now (I do straighten my hair at times, so I only use this product when I want curls!).

Here is what I do (it’s a process!):

  • Use a leave-in conditioner on towel dried hair (it’s a must for my hair)
  • Allow hair to dry a bit
  • Pour a coin size amount of Marc Anthony Strictly Curls – Curl Envy Cream on my palm and gently scrunch into the hair
  • Allow hair to dry completely (without touching or scrunching!)
  • Use a bit more of the cream on dry hair if I see a bit of frizz

  • Hydrating
  • Smoothing
  • Light – no residue (but do use sparingly!)
  • Paraben-free, Sulfate-free, Phthalate-free

  • Not fully natural or organic (does include avocado oil, shea butter and vitamin E, but also many ingredients I’m not familiar with!)

This is a very good product and I will continue to use it. Having said that – I have a couple of issues:

  • I would not use this product without a leave-in conditioner. Maybe that’s just me, but I like to have a good ‘leave-in’ prior to using the cream.
  • Not completely natural, so likely not for those in the market for pure, organic products.

Happy Mother’s Day!

We celebrate Mother’s Day in Canada on the second Sunday of May.

I will be celebrating this day with my boys, of course.  They are my heart, my soul, my love and my life.  Today I thank God for allowing me to be a mom.  I’m SO grateful and humbled.  I never knew what love was until I met my kids, I truly didn’t.  And I know how lucky I am to experience the power of this deep love.
