It’s Monday: Let’s Juice – Orange Power Smoothie

Happy Monday!

It seems that everyone everywhere is under the weather!  Coughing, sneezing….you know, all the works!  Do your body good today and try the Orange Power Smoothie!

Today’s recipe will help you get rid of all those little bugs quicker (or prevent them from coming near you altogether!).

Ingredients

  • 2 LARGE CARROTS – peeled and chopped (I used my Mish Mash carrot flowers!!)
  • 1 ORANGE – peeled and segmented
  • 1 INCH (2.5 CM) OF FRESH GINGER – sliced (no need to peel – just wash very well)
  • 0.5 TSP OF GROUND TURMERIC
  • 1.5 CUPS OF COCONUT WATER

Blend well (add ice if desired) and serve! Tada!

Turmeric is best absorbed with black pepper.  If you like a bit of spice in your drink, I suggest garnishing your smoothie with some black pepper, and off you go!

The amazing ingredients in this beautiful drink will provide antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, excellent source of Vitamins A and C and a good source of Vitamins K and B, potassium, calcium and folate.

Friday Review: Berkeley North Restaurant

Shouldn’t all food just look GOOD?  It DOES at the Berkeley North Restaurant in Hamilton, Ontario!

If you’re from Hamilton, it’s a no brainer – you absolutely must visit this fantastic restaurant!  If you’re from oustide of Hamilton, come for a visit and you won’t be disappointed!

A small, cozy place with brilliantly positive energy, fantastic and accomodating staff and attention paid to the smallest details!  Tea is served in beautiful porcelain teacups, thank you very much.  Pretty little purse hangers are provided for each table.  The bill comes clipped with a tiny clothespin.  Can you tell I love the little details?  Yes!

And, MOST IMPORTANTLY – food not only looks good, it tastes great!

I opt for the salad bowls each time I visit for lunch.  Beautiful, healthy and delish!  If you’re not into salads, the Berkeley North menu accomodates all – vegans, vegeterians and meat lovers!

Price wise – very reasonable.  CAD$20-30, gets you a beautiful lunch.

The restaurant also offers a take out option.  Order online and pick up in about 15-20 minutes.  I had a small hiccup with ordering – the online order timed out and in effect, it was not placed.  I received a call from the restaurant within 10 minutes and they were quick to correct the problem.  Fantastic!

Berkeley North has a beautiful dinner menu as well, which I’m SO looking forward to trying!  See you there!

It’s Monday: Let’s Juice – Beet Red

Hi all!  Happy Monday! Let’s start off the week (and New Year!) on a healthy note.

Let’s talk juices and smoothies!

As you may know, I am an avid lover of juices and smoothies (Juicing for your health).  I seriously credit juicing with maintaining my migraine headaches under control!  Plus, I feel more energized and overall healthier ever since I began juicing.

After all the eating and drinking over the holidays, I think it’s time to get back into a healthy routine.  Today’s recipe will provide a much needed detox and a boost of essential vitamins our bodies will thank us for!

  • 1 BEET – chopped into pieces. For a ‘smoother smoothie’, you may consider boiling your beet.  I don’t.  I like to consume it raw
  • 1 APPLE – cored and chopped into pieces
  • 1 LEMON – cut into pieces
  • 1.5 CUPS OF COCONUT WATER

Easy, right?  With just a few ingredients, you will provide your body with well needed iron, vitamins B and C, potassium, fibre, manganese and antioxidants (beets are full of cancer-protective antioxidants!)   Plus, you will detoxify and keep well hydrated!

Blending vs. juicing

I’m a big fan of blending, mainly because smoothies add SO much fibre to my diet and keep me satisfied for much longer.

My Ninja Blender does a beautiful job even with the toughest root vegetables!

If you don’t like all that pulp (hey, it’s OK!), you can opt to use your juicer.  The Omega J8006 and SimpleTaste Electric Masticating have great reviews.

No juicer? No problem! I simply strain with a fine mesh strainer!

A juice can give you a quick energy fix – much quicker than a smoothie, as it absorbs nutrients and sugars into the bloodstream much quicker.

Either way, enjoy the goodness you are giving your body.  You’ll suddenly feel more energized, happy and healthy!

Fun facts I learned:

  • You don’t need to peel your beets, as long as you wash/scrub them really well! (PLEASE wear plastic gloves – beets stain BIG time!)
  • You can store your juice and smoothie for a couple of days in the refrigerator (make a batch for two days!)
